About
This is inarguably the biggest and best zoo in Cambodia and quite unlike all others in that most of the 100+ species of animals on display were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.
Phnom Tamao Zoological Park and Wildlife Rescue Center is spread out across several hectares of forest about an hour's drive from Phnom Penh. The park is home to some 1,200 animals that were rescued from wildlife traffickers, and where possible are being rehabilitated for release back into the wild.
The wildlife park is a sanctuary for elephants, tigers, bears, gibbons, deer, pythons, parrots and dozens of lesser-known exotic species. Most of the enclosures give the animals room to roam around, and some are large enough that you may have difficulty spotting the animals inside.
The enclosures are spread out over large distances. It is possible to visit most of them on foot, but a car, moto or bicycle would make it much easier, especially on a hot afternoon.
This is an excellent place to take children to learn about wildlife and in the best conditions that the park's limited funding will allow. The park does offer some educational shows where a keeper shows off elephants for example, but the animals here are generally not forced to perform or pose for photos as is common elsewhere.
It is important to keep clear of the cages and enclosures as some animals, particularly the primates, are lightning fast and eager to grab clothes, phones and food. And watch out for the wild monkeys (not part of the zoo) that hang out near food vendors and can be aggressive when trying to snatch food and drinks.
Remember to bring bug spray, sunscreen and a hat, and good shoes if you intend to walk it.
