About

This crumbling temple located 30 km south of Phnom Penh on the shore of Tonle Bati is often confused with the more famous jungle temple in Angkor Wat that shares its name. And it is in many ways a scaled-down version of that iconic temple, commissioned by the same ruler and built in the same architectural style.

Ta Prohm at Tonle Bati was one of many temples built during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the late 12th and early 13th century to house the Jayabuddhamahanatha statues that he sent to be erected in his vassal cities.

The brick and laterite temple complex lies in ruin, but the bas-relief carvings that cover its walls are in good condition and depict Hindu deities, ceremonies and myths. Interestingly, the chambers Inside the temple contain both Hindu lingams and Buddha statues, a combination that showcases the blending of religions during Jayavarman VII's reign.
