About
Tonle Bati is a popular lake and picnic area about 30 kilometers south of Phnom Penh. It's a great place to take the family for a relaxing day of chilling out in the thatch-roofed bamboo huts that line the lake's shore.
Each group of huts is reached by crossing planks and usually contain hammocks, a table and a reed floor mat. You pay for the space, and then any food or drinks you order. It's usually not a problem to bring some food from outside, or purchase it from the vendors paddling by on boats.
There are plenty of water activities on this natural lake, which is over 6km long and about a kilometer across. There are boats to rent, and some even come with fishing gear. The lake is polluted near the picnic site, but other areas are fine for swimming. The water is not that deep, and during the dry season you can wade far from shore.
The picnic site is also just a short walk from Ta Prohm, a 13th century temple complex built in the same Bayon style as Angkor Wat. It won't take long to tour the modestly-sized sandstone temple and its intricate stone carvings, which makes it a great introduction for kids to ancient Khmer culture.
